“This conversion of a single-car garage into a short-term rental accessory dwelling unit for a Portland-based DJ, event producer, and multidisciplinary creative attempts to balance a global lifestyle with local hospitality. The ADU was envisioned as a home base between international travel, a space to host visiting artists performing at the events he curates, and functions as a source of passive income while Miles is on the road traveling the Americas in his self-built adventure van.
The design resolves a comprehensive program within a limited footprint. Natural materials are selected to support wellness and reinforce a sense of grounding within the small interior. A sleeping loft is positioned above a tightly organized core that houses a walk-in shower, water closet, laundry, and storage. Heated floors extend throughout the bathing cave, which is carved out from the sleeping/storage volume. The shower houses a built-in planter and steaming bench to connect the bathing ritual to its inspiration from the jungles of Central America. The vanity is carefully oriented to reflect natural light from the west-facing entry glazing, increasing light penetration deep into the interior and enhancing the spatial experience in an otherwise recessed and compact zone.”
