Evergreen Highway in Vancouver, Washington slides along bluffs of the Columbia River, generating views of the water, and of Portland from across the river. When Ariel and Levi bought their low-slung ranch house at the top of the hill, tucked beneath a grove of Douglas Fir trees, they approached us with dreams of an addition to access views of the river.
The response to the program is a split level addition designed as a device for experiencing the river views. The rear of the house is opened to connect the existing bedrooms with a renovated kitchen, and additional living, dining and office space on the main level. The connecting stair accesses new sleeping quarters and indoor /outdoor living space on the new second level.
