the 1940’s produced mixed use buildings before the term was coined. the owner of this former dry-cleaning business grew up in the apartment upstairs, built just after wwii. the renovation of the lower floor into creative office space was an exercise in restraint and peeling back the layers of past construction work. the ceiling is removed to expose original timber structural joists, expanding the perceptual ceiling height and warming the space. walls and floors are stripped of their old finishes and exposed to the extent possible. new electrical, lighting and window coverings allow natural and artificial lighting to be customizable for a variety of uses.
