this private residence for a family of four takes inspiration from the Sikh religion, which is a strong identifying characteristic of the clients’ daily life. when sikh individuals are initiated into the faith, male members adopt the surname Singh (meaning lion) and female members adopt the surname Kaur (meaning princess). this practice symbolizes the uniting of all members of society as equals under God.
the architecture of the house is conceived as a protective, solid first floor, defined by three primary volumes (representing the lion). a lighter, more open second story (the princess) gently rests upon the base. the relationship between the two elements creates strategic opportunities for natural lighting, experiential views, and positive air flow between floors.
