The design for this luxury condo renovation is inspired by classical music composition. The client, a classically trained pianist, requested an efficient layout with lots of natural light — and zero doors. Our solution organized all of the utilitarian living functions — storage, closets, desk space, toilet and laundry — into a single volume, constructed as cabinetry, that also divides the living spaces from sleeping and bathing areas. A steel-framed loft is added in order to increase floor area and to provide home-office space. During the renovation, we exposed much of the original masonry and heavy timber structure in order to pay homage to the structure’s industrial roots as an 1890’s cotton mill.
